Biography for Gil Gilmore
How did you find out about NBG and why you want to do
this ride?
I discovered this
project by means of a posting to the newsgroup rec.bicycles.rides.
My interest in this project is an expression of my commitment to promoting bicycling as a means of
personal renewal, appropriate transportation, and sustainable development. A balanced and convenient system of networked
roads supplemented by dedicated trail systems might attract more individuals
toward reducing their use of automotive transportation. Finally, we need to
promote vehicular cycling as a means for educating bicyclists in the safe use
of their vehicles.
Touring experience: Twelve years of solo, self supported wanderings that took me from London to Nepal, across North Africa, and from Philadelphia to Peru.
Tell us about your bike: Its nothing special but it gets the job done. It’s an 1997 Mongoose Omega touring bike. It has a 7-speed STI triple with 26-34- 46/12-23 gearing. I use racks and large front and rear panniers.
Describe your training regimen: I don't have one. The bike is my sole means of transportation so I'm conditioned just in the course of regular commutes, some of which are long distance (CT-Philly)
How many miles do you ride a year? Approximately 10 K miles
Are you car free or interested? I decided to become Car-free and carefree in 1989 and have never regretted. (OK, almost never regretted except when it’s well below zero and snowing and I'm sick -- then I might have a few pangs. But the next warm day confirms the wisdom of my choice)
I also manage a emailing group promoting this car-free or car-light lifestyle commitment ==> Carfree@yahoo.com
How are you making time for this event? By simply taking the time off. One can always make time for the things that are really important. Besides, I'm a workaholic and this will be a nice semi-vacation.
How many miles do you plan to ride in 2002? Probably between 15 and 20K
What are your fears about doing this ride? I've always traveled solo and so I hope that the group dynamics will work out. Also, I've heard that the trails become rather nasty with rain so I hope we don't suddenly make up for the lack of rain this year while we're riding. OTOH, we sorely need the rain due to the drought that currently plagues the northeast so I'd not really object.
Do you have any special skills? Depends what you mean by "special" I play the pipe organ and harpsichord but that's probably not helpful. I can do basic bike mechanics, have done a fair amount of community organizing, and worked as a journalist.
Do you have any helpful friends for us Affiliated bike club e-mails? I'm currently trying to pursue this direction.
What other activities are you involved in? Quite a few though I suspect the full list would be boring to everyone but my Mom.
