National Bicycle Greenway (NBG)
Santa Cruz NBG Fest
http://www.bikeroute.com/SCNBGFest

The Santa Cruz NBG Fest is one of the world's largest events for cross-country and trans-coastal cyclists and will draw cyclists from all over the US.

Biography for Chris Detwiler

How did you find out about NBG and why you want to do this ride?
It was more like you guys found me. Martin somehow got a hold of our shop and talked to Rick, my boss. He would have done the ride himself except for the fact that he is selling his house and buying another one at the moment. He passed the opportunity on to me and I gladly too it.

I want to do this ride to personally challenge myself. I've never ridden more than 100 miles at a time. I'm going to try and do all 180 miles in one day. Also I am an avid supporter of building and maintaining bike trails. Anything I can do to further that process along, I'll be glad to do.

Touring experience:
I ride for fun and recreation. It relaxes me. I've ridden in a couple of different spots around Ohio but nothing extraordinary.

Tell us about your bike:
I will be riding my Bike Friday, "Pocket Llama" and towing a trailer with my clothes and other gear. The Bike Friday folds up and fits into a suitcase so you can check it as luggage or even carry it right onto the train with you (which I will be doing). The suitcase converts to a trailer and attaches to the bike, so you have a way to carry your luggage.

Describe your training regimen:
I ride about sixty miles a week over the course of three days.

How many miles do you ride a year?
1000

Are you car free or interested?
Currently I cannot be. I live about sixty miles from my job. It's unrealistic for me to ride 120 miles every day

How are you making time for this event?
Bicycle One is sponsoring me. They are paying my way and paying for the days I'll be off work.

How many miles do you plan to ride in 2002?
1000

What are your fears about doing this ride?
My biggest fear is the weather. I hope the sun is out and the wind is not relevant. Also I'm not sure where to go once I get into Indy.

Do you have any special skills?
Nope, just sheer determination. I push myself hard.

Are you affiliated with any bike club E-mail groups?
www.bicycleone.com

What other activities are you involved in?
Just work and ride. I like to work on cars as well

Occupation:
